Don’t Be Alarmed, It’s My First Time
Jazzy

Sorry to anyone who cares but I’m finally writing my first blog of the semester. YES, I know that it’s already Novemebr and I have a lot of catching up to do but hear me out. I’m truely not the slacker that I may appear to be. Between bowling, cheer, looking at grad schools, trying to maintain 21hrs this semester (I failed miserably) and working on my portfolio for my senior show next semester, who has the time?! I’ve only been going through the motions in some of my classes this semester (okay maybe all of them) so I didn’t see fit to try and muster up enough line for a blog, only to constantly remind everyone that I really don’t have the time to fit this all in. Some of you may say thatn if I can frequent the pages of FB as often as I do, then I should be able to write out the happenings of my entire life story within a blog, but that really isn’t the case. In all honesty, I leave my computer at home just so I’m not tempted to take a “quick” glance at my notifications, or to see what everyone else is up to. With that being said, anytime you see that I’m online, or have just posted a quick reply to a comment, I’m on my phone. It’s one of those low quality, but gets the job done blackberries, if you need to make a phone call kind of phones…and it’s NOT WordPress compatible.

My work never ends!

What’s good, Monday?

“Truly great friends are hard to find, difficult to leave, and impossible to forget.”

Happy Monday everyone! I had a pretty delightful weekend considering that I did not have to work at all! I got to spend a lot of time with my family and friends. I really enjoy having good, quality bonding time with the people I love the most!

Before I get into my weekend though…Thursday night was a big night in my family. My little baby brother got Confirmed! I was lucky enough that I got to be his sponsor! Not only is he my brother, but also my best friend. I do not know what I would do without him. I am truly proud to say that he is my brother.

On Saturday I spent the afternoon with my amazing mom. I had a great time shopping with her and just being able to spend time with her. I was also able to have family dinner with my family on Sunday night. Nothing can replace the importance of family.

As I also said, I got to spend a lot of time with my friends. I have made so many great friends here over the past couple years and I am truly blessed to know all of them. I am so thankful to have these amazing people in my life.

As for this week…I work tonight and then tomorrow night I start training to become and editor for the Vantage! If anyone has any good story ideas, or something they would like to read, let me know! Wednesday should be a good night out with my ladies and then some fun festivities over the weekend!

I hope everyone has a delightful week!

Keep it classy,

Alyssa

Soul Food

Hey Y’all!

Last week I talked about how excited I was to go dancing. Let me tell you, I have been in a good mood since last Friday and it’s only gotten better! Sure, there have been some rough spots – migraines, oversleeping, still being tired anyway, etc., but overall, it’s like the heavens are smiling down on me.

So I went dancing with friends that Friday night and it was amazing! I had tons of fun and I owned the dance floor. For real. It was great. Then, Saturday night, we went out again! We went early and got in free. Later on, a guy kept asking me to dance and insisted on teaching me swing, not that I had any obligations. I can now say that I can swing dance well! I also saw a man waltz and I am still insanely jealous of his dance partner.

I’m not sure what has made my week so fantastic, really. It’s been just as stressful and just as jam-packed as usual. I had a really successful tutoring session and the NU Day today went fantastically, but I had a couple 10/11 hour days thrown in (minus homework time). I got some really good grades on a couple assignments but I did a spectacularly awful job on a couple tests. I got sent home from work for having a migraine/being useless but I also got two really awesome massages. It’s been pretty 50/50 on the good and bad, but maybe I’m just looking at everything through rose-colored glasses ;)

I hope this weekend will be just as great, because I haven’t wiped the smile off my face in days.

Much Love,

Anna

Happiness

“Being happy doesn’t mean that everything is perfect. It means that you’ve decided to look beyond the imperfections.”

It’s been a rough couple weeks. Between being sick, deciding to double major, and worrying about my uncle, who has brain cancer, I am super stressed.

Besides my uncle’s cancer, I have been worried about what I am going to do with my life. Yeah, I’m only 19, but I still feel that I need some sort of plan. So, I have decided to double major in Psychology and Communications. That way, if I do not want to pursue grad school right away, I have two career paths to look into. How cool would it be to do Sports Broadcasting though? I love sports and would love to do something with that. ORRR. Sports Apparel marketing. Incorporating my love of fashion and sports would be AWESOME.

It snowed last night too. Nothing stuck because it is pretty nice outside right now. I hate snow, but it will be fun to see everyone out on the quad once it snows and such. Which reminds me, saw a group of guys playing football on the quad the other day. I love having such a small campus and being able to appreciate the small things like that.

As of right now, I am putting all of my faith in God. I can only pray that He will lead me in the right direction. I am going to try and destress and just appreciate my life while I have it. There may be a lot of imperfections, but that is no reason to not be happy.

Keep it classy,

Alyssa

The Wonders of Carbon Dioxide

Tired. I am so tired that the first time I typed out “tired” today, I wrote “tires”. The year is beginning to take its toll, but it is worth it. Apart from all my science classes demanding that I study for their tests, I also have theatre to add to my plate. Despite the loads of stuff I have to do, theatre functions as a sort of relief, an escape from the “real” world. It is always important do something you love in your day-to-day life; for me, I love to perform. Newman definitely helps me out in my performance abilities.

I am on the Sloppy Joe Improv troupe. This has helped my acting and performing abilities immensely. I am super excited for the improv regional in January. The troupe has been drilling improv to prepare for the event; its gonna be a blast!

In addition to improv, I am also dabbling in music. I never really sang much in high school and I was not really confident in my voice. During my freshman year I made a lot of friends who were also in choir. They eventually convinced me to join the Newman Chorale. I have a blast in the choir; the choir is like one big family and I love it. Newman also offers voice lesson. I take advantage of this as well. Singing has become a very fantastic way for me to relieve stress and bring some extra happiness to my life.

Finally, the Newman theatre program is back with a vengeance. I am a theatre minor here at Newman. I am also the lead role in our fall production Lend Me A Tenor. This is the largest role I have had in any production and it is a lot of work, but it is a welcomed break from Organic Chemistry. The character I portray goes through a transformation that eventually makes him much more confident in himself. By acting as this character, I have picked up a little bit of that dynamic confidence.

Performance has done so much to make my life fantastic. It has taught me to role with the punches like a scene in improv. I have also picked up a few friends and some confidence along the way. Singing is great for me to relieve stress and with each note I sing out I rid my body of carbon dioxide. The plants in my room then use it to make glucose through photosynthesis.

Sorry for the little science blip, but I am still a science student. I just cannot help it sometimes.

May your lives be bueno,
Francisco “Pancho” Fields

Music and Flowers and Dancing

What an eventful week! Wow!

This Sunday was the fall concert for choir. Singing is my one true love, even above biology, and there is nothing that brings me greater pleasure than being able to put on a fantastic performance for all my precious people. I must say, I was worried for a while that the choir wasn’t going to pull this one together, but in the end, it was an absolutely mind-blowing experience. My parents came down from KC to see me and we had lunch together. My choir director also gave me a great compliment! She said I had wonderful facial expressions, as always, and it really made my day because individual praise isn’t something that she doles out very often.

The concert was even on the news! Channel 3 got lost and their reporters stumbled upon the chapel while we were singing. It was pretty cool. Today we performed at the sister’s chapel, in the convent here on campus. We always perform for them separately, because not all of the sisters are mobile enough to make it across campus. It’s a great way to give back and thank them for sponsoring our university. I love visiting the sisters! They are the sweetest and kindest people, and they always lavish praises on us. It brings joy to everyone, choir and sisters alike, to perform for them.

Tonight I’m going to watch the improv show here on campus and then go dancing for the first time in almost a month! I couldn’t be more excited. I love to dance! It seems like there will be a pretty big crowd, and there will be guys who are both able to dance and not shy. I can’t wait!

Anna

PS I bought carnations and a vase for my pod in Beata. It’s a beautiful thing to have in the living room. I love fresh flowers!

Back in the fray kinda day.

“I’ve had good times and bad times and times that called for extreme shenanigans(the silly, mischievous kind not the shady dealings kind.) but in the end, I’d do it all again.”

I just made that up but it is entirely true based on what I’ve been up to. So far this year I’ve received amazing test scores, sickness (not recommending this one), prolonged applause, slaps in the face (Thanks Pancho) and a ridiculous Italian accent (Which I will explain later). All of this and tons more!

Hopefully from reading that you gain a handful of confusion, that is exactly what my life is like. The college life is nothing like what I was told it was going to be simply because I decided to have my own instead of trying to imitate those that went before me.  As you may or may not have noticed most of my blogs have a structure (maybe.) This one is more of a stream of consciousness because I am AWAKE!

Now, to make some sense of what is going on I am doing very well in all aspects of everything. Classes are going well, singing and acting are tons O’ fun and did I mention that I’m just happy? Well, I’m very happy. :)

As I type this right now I can only wonder where I will be in three years because…College is almost OVER! I can’t believe it.  But believe me when I type I’m just getting started! This thing called potential, I’ve hardly scraped the surface. (I hope.)

For now I must leave you interwebs as I have multiple jobs to do which right now I am ignoring to converse with you. Thanks for reading!

Bless your faces! If you sneezed while reading this blog, Bless you.
Peace!

Newman’s Got Talent!

Hello all! It has been an incredibly busy semester for me so far, but it is finally slowing down a bit since my 1st 8 week class (Earth & Space Science) has ended (FINALLY). I now have my Monday and Wednesday nights free to write lesson plans for class and actually go to some of the awesome events on campus! Last week we had Open Mic night at Scooters and I didn’t realize there was so much talent at Newman and from people you would least expect it. Newman should start its own TV series ‘Newman’s Got Talent!’ There were students who sang, told jokes, did stand up comedy, danced, and played instruments. Scooters was completely filled with students and staff enjoying the entertainment and delicious coffee.
Another amazing even that’s coming up is the Chorale Christmas Concert, the concert is always a great way to get into the Christmas spirit (but it’s still a little too early though to be putting up x-mas lights and christmas stuff at Wal-Mart!). I was in chorale for 5 semesters and I am soooo sad that it didn’t work with my schedule this year :( it was so much fun and everyone really gets to know each other and be a big family.

Young, Wild, and Free

“So what we go out That’s how its supposed to be Living young and wild and free.”

Great song. Shout out to Wiz Khalifa for producing such wonderful and uppity music! Also, my anthem right now, because college is not all about work, but play also!

In other words, it has been super busy! Between Admissions work, my outside job, school, and marathon training I have had barely any time to think! I am enjoying all of the people that I give tours to and the students I have met on the two NU days so far! It is such a joy to be able to talk to these kids about their college dreams and aspirations.

My outside job at Francesca’s Collections is going delightfully well! We made our goal this month so we get a gift card. Yay for shopping! =) I is approaching Christmas season though which means busy, busy, busy! I am excited to work my first Black Friday in retail, even though I know it will be difficult.

School is going well too. I have enrolled for my classes next semester and am excited to see what the rest of the year holds. Once again, however, I am contemplating what my future will hold. There are so many things I want to do that it is unbelievable! I actually just gave a tour to a lovely girl named Cristen and she feels the same that I do! It was nice to discuss this with someone else! I wish her the best luck!

In other words. Kim Kardashian is getting divorced after 72 days of marriage to Kris Humphries. I honestly cried myself to sleep for the past few days. Keep your head up girl.

I hope that everyone makes it through this weather and has a delightful Wednesday!

Keep it classy!

Blasting Off Again!

I have survived another week of midterms. It has been a crazy year so far. This semester’s midterm week was crazy! My science classes are more demanding than ever. I am also the lead role in Newman’s fall theatrical production, Lend Me A Tenor. When I got the role, happiness took over me it has been a busy semester, but it has been worth it. I am also involved in the Newman Chorale this semester. Our first concert was Sunday and the channel three news came and did a story on our performance. I was on TV for 3 seconds! It was the best three seconds of my life. When my roommate (who is also in chorale) and I found saw that we were on the news we freaked out and ran around our pod, jumping in jubilation. This year has done so much to help me with my confidence. I feel so great about being a Newman student. It is part of who I am and I love it. I don’t think I would be comfortable enough anywhere else to dress up as Team Rocket for Halloween and parade around campus except here. Newman is an accepting and nurturing environment that helps all students to achieve all that they want to achieve in life. I know that as a Newman Jet, I will, “blast off at the speed of light,” and achieve my goals!
