Many people believe that one’s senior year of college is similar to one’s senior year of high school. You rule the campus, go to class whenever you want, leisurely do your school work, stay out late and often and essentially throw all caution to the wind. For many seniors and my fellow classmates this is true….except for me! I decided to fill my freshman year with ‘gen eds’ and other nonsense course that would not fill my major requirements or my graduation requirements and on top of that I decided to change my major mid-summer of my sophomore year from Business to Biology. So here I am my last semester of my senior year taking 20 credit hours and holding down 3 jobs! So one can say that I’m a little jealous of some of my fellow classmates but as the say in Rome “what doesn’t kill you only makes you stronger”. I actually I doubt that phrase came from Rome or has any Roman origin. So Ill just keep trucking along and keep telling myself ’14 more weeks, 14 more weeks’

So to start: WOW! THE SEMESTER IS ALMOST OVER! Okay, now that I have moved past the initial five seconds of excitement: OH MAN! THE SEMESTER IS ALMOST OVER! (If you could not tell, that was the voice of a panicked student with lots of big deadlines. Just thought I’d clarify!) Yes, we have again reached that point in the semester when everything is due. Except that I think it came earlier this year. Maybe?! Either way, it has arrived. Which really is not a big deal. Usually, no matter how much I may complain, I secretly enjoy the pressure (see previous blogs, I have admitted how crazy that sounds). That is, I enjoy it when all the proper pieces of technology work! When you’re without reliable Internet or phone (text messaging classmates is crucial at this point in the semester), things get dicey. Therefore, after all of that rambling into nonsense, my advice is start early. Way early. And save often. (That might be more important than start early…)

Its spring season again and the year is nearly coming to an end. Spring Break vacations were pretty good back home in Brownsville, Texas and got away from the fridge (Wichita) for a little bit. Its hard to believe that time is running fast. Meanwhile, I am going to enjoy the last couple of NU Days here at Newman and keep doing my student-athlete business as I have been the last 3 years. Got to finish strong and have as much fun as possible before heading out to some new beginnings.

Why is the remaining few weeks of the semester so hard after spring break? It’s the hardest transition out of all the other breaks. Summer break is hard to transition from but it must be done; so I naturally ease into the brand new school year with a positive outlook. One would think that thanksgiving break would be hard to come back from but many times its one and done. One more week of actual school and than its finals and than we’re done. Okay so actually two (one and done sounds cooler). Winter break is a little hard with the Kansas weather looming over my arrival but a start of a new semester and a little mystery to my upcoming classes puts a damper on the ominous looking semester. But yet I still push on. Now comes the horrible spring break. After its done we have six weeks left. Six weeks!! Not two and done and nothing to look forward to but just six more weeks of the same old classes, assignments, and test. Blah. Another break is very nice however the positioning of it makes it hard for many college students, well me anyways, to focus on the remaining semester.

This past weekend was very busy! The Latin Dance was a success and by the end everyone was breaking out some new dance moves/ steps. It was different from the dances in the past, because the high school students that stayed the night on campus were able to join us. This added a random twist to the night.
The other events on and off campus also went quite well. Newman had a variety of students on campus for NU Day, and I heard it was a success!!

This is our last week of school before break and so everyone is focusing on the light at the end of the tunnel. Spring break gives us a chance to re-energize ourselves, so we finish up the semester not completely worn out. I have a feeling that most people will be trying to catch up on sleep…..especially since the time change has made everyone dead tired! I cannot wait to get through the week, so I can relax and hang out with friends!!!

The spring semester is the one semester where you really feel that halfway point, the peak of the mountain before everything starts to roll “downhill” so to speak. That halfway point is the much needed “Spring Break.” Today, while waiting for my Technologies class to start, I realized we only have two more meetings until spring break. Whoa! Once we get back from spring break, the papers and the end-of-the-semester scramble begin. Oh geez. However, I have been keeping up with my planner (miracle right there), and I generally understand what is going on. (With a few exceptions…) This could be the semester I am in control! Ha. My biggest thing is the big Huckleberry Finn unit. Definitely a challenge. I find that I am really starting to appreciate all educators; they have a big job in planning activities for every class period. Man, I will definitely have to rethink all of the complaining I did in high school! But seriously things are getting crazy so it’s just time to really start honing my time management skills and getting down to business! We’ll see how I am doing next week…

These visits allow you to compare every school you are looking at; this is the time when each university is allowed to “strut their stuff.” Instead, I found out where all of my friends were planning to go and said, “Okay, that sounds good enough for me!” For my freshman year, I attended Wichita State University. Wichita State is an excellent school with plenty of opportunities for any student. However, if I would have done my research, I would have discovered that while WSU is a great school, it wasn’t the school for me.

My graduating class (from high school) was made up of about 138 students. I grew up with 3/4 of those students, attending grades K-12 together. My college experience would need to be a little more personal because that is the kind of person I am. Upon arriving at Newman, I knew it was the right “fit” for me. The class sizes vary depending how far into your degree you are, and the professors have the ability (and the desire) to get to know their students. If I had used my campus visits wisely, I may have discovered this from the beginning. So my advice to high school seniors (and juniors) is do your research. Finding the right college is an important part of your learning experience. Some need a bigger school with crazy class listings while others are more interested in a smaller, more personal experience. Whatever your preference be, I encourage you to take the time to find which suits you best!

I have recently been reminded of the genuine kindness and compassion that exists on the Newman campus.

It can be seen in a staff member’s invite to her house on Valentine’s Day to hang out with her since you may be dateless for the night. It is seen in a professor bringing snacks for your class to keep you awake since you have had a problem drifting off in her lecture that is right after lunch. It is seen in a roommate bringing you home ice cream to the residence hall just because she knew you would enjoy it after a long day. It is seen in staff members’ concern and encouragement regarding an upcoming doctor’s appointment. It is seen in a classmate loaning you her book for the semester because she had an extra one. It is seen in the daily smiles and greetings from people like those who work in the dining center at lunch time, to those who work on the custodial staff even late at night.

It is amazing to me how much you can get to know people throughout your time at a school. It’s good to be at a place where you feel loved.

It really is hard to believe that we are already in our third week of school! (And I’m still motivated!) I have to be honest, by this point in the semester I usually have to force myself to attend class. It really is a shameful thing. However, this semester has been really refreshing, and I find that I am even more motivated. My reasoning is that I am actually in the Teacher Education Program. This means that a large majority of my classes are Education classes. Don’t get me wrong, I love English/Literature, but Education is what I feel like I am really here for. The classes are great; the professors are all-new to me. While the program requires a lot of work, it is work I feel is really going to apply to my future career. One thing I am really looking forward to is my “Unit” I am planning. I am planning a Unit on Huckleberry Finn. These are the kinds of things I will be able to save and use for the future. Even one of my English classes is helping apply assignments now to the future. My “final” project for World Literature consists of teaching a novel to the class.

Mainly it is just nice to know that people aren’t kidding you when they say, “Just wait until you get into your major. Then you’ll really enjoy your classes.” This is really what it is all about. So seriously, just wait until you get into what you really are passionate about… It makes a difference in coming to class. Granted, I wouldn’t mind sleeping in a few extra hours, but I don’t think that has anything to do with not wanting to go to class! Good luck and enjoy your semester! Until next time!

Those finals are finally over! Now, I am looking forward for a long break and relax with my family down in Texas. It was a special semester for me because it was my last season as the goalkeeper for the men’s soccer team. The truth is that things must come to an end and one must eventually move one. Meanwhile, I must enjoy my last academic semseter by helping and supporting Newman as much as I can. I need a some time in sun and down in the border, I will get the chance to avoid the cold for at least a month. Safe trips and happy holiday’s to all!!
God Bless.
